Mango

Founded 1984 · Barcelona, Spain

Overview

Barcelona fashion company founded in 1984 by the brothers Isak and Nahman Andic, known for polished, Mediterranean-minded womenswear sold in more than a hundred markets. Privately owned by the Andic family and management.

History

Mango was founded in 1984 by Isak Andic and his brother Nahman, Sephardic Jewish emigrants from Turkey living in Barcelona, who opened their first Mango store in Barcelona that year. From the start the label offered fashionable, well-cut womenswear at accessible prices, with a polished, urban look that set it slightly apart from its Spanish rivals.

The company grew quickly across Spain and then abroad, largely through franchising, which allowed Mango stores to open in markets from Portugal to the Middle East and Asia during the 1990s. It was early to the internet: its website appeared in 1995, and in 2000 it began selling online, among the first Spanish retailers to do so. By the end of 2025 online sales reached more than 120 markets and accounted for roughly a third of the company's revenue.

Mango's identity has been built on its campaigns as much as its clothes. Kate Moss was its face from 2012, followed by Miranda Kerr, and the brand has worked with models and stylists to give its collections a more grown-up, editorial sheen than most high-street labels. Menswear, first launched as H.E. by Mango in 2008, was renamed Mango Man in 2014, and the business later added Mango Kids, Mango Teen and, in 2022, Mango Home. For its fortieth anniversary in 2024 it released a collection with Victoria Beckham.

After a more difficult period in the 2010s, the company returned to growth in the 2020s under chief executive Toni Ruiz, with a strategy focused on larger stores, online growth and expansion in the United States, beginning with a Fifth Avenue flagship in 2022. In 2024 Mango reported revenue of €3.3 billion and, in 2025, €3.8 billion, both records.

Isak Andic, the company's chairman and largest shareholder and one of Spain's richest people, died in December 2024 after a fall while hiking near Montserrat, outside Barcelona. Ownership passed largely to his children. The company remains private and headquartered at its campus in Palau-solità i Plegamans, north of Barcelona, where its design teams work on collections sold through more than 2,700 stores in over 110 countries. Forty years on, Mango is still the Spanish label that dresses the high street with a little Barcelona polish.
