Overview
History
Hugo Ferdinand Boss founded his clothing company in 1924 in Metzingen, a small textile town in Swabia, south-western Germany. It made general workwear, raincoats and uniforms. The business nearly failed in the Depression, and in 1931 Boss joined the Nazi Party; through the 1930s and the war years the company produced uniforms for the party's organisations and the armed forces, and during the war it used forced labourers, most of them women from occupied countries. The founder was fined and stripped of his voting rights in post-war denazification proceedings, and died in 1948. In 2011 the company published an independent historical study of this period and expressed its "profound regret".
After the war the founder's son-in-law Eugen Holy took over and the firm turned to men's suits, receiving its first large order in 1950. In the late 1960s Holy's sons, Jochen and Uwe, took charge and set out to build an international brand. The first BOSS suits appeared in 1970, cut in the softer, sharper silhouette that defined power dressing in the following decades, and the company sponsored Formula One teams and drivers to put its name on the world stage. Its suits became a uniform of the 1980s, worn on screen in Miami Vice and in boardrooms everywhere.
The company listed on the stock exchange in the 1980s. The Italian textile group Marzotto bought a controlling stake in 1991, and from 2007 to 2015 the private equity firm Permira controlled it through Valentino Fashion Group. Over those years Hugo Boss added womenswear, fragrance, eyewear, the HUGO and BOSS Orange lines and a large network of its own stores, and from 2013 the American designer Jason Wu led its womenswear for several years.
Daniel Grieder, formerly of Tommy Hilfiger, became chief executive in 2021 and in 2022 relaunched the company around two brands, BOSS and HUGO, with new logos, celebrity-heavy campaigns and a push towards younger customers and casualwear. Marco Falcioni was appointed creative director in 2022 and has led BOSS collections shown in Milan. Frasers Group, the British retailer founded by Mike Ashley, built up a large stake from 2020, reaching close to half of the shares by 2026.
Headquartered in Metzingen still, beside the outlet village its founders' heirs pioneered, Hugo Boss remains one of the world's largest makers of tailored menswear, and a company that has had to reckon openly with the history that shaped it.
