Overview
History
Zimmermann began in 1991 at Paddington Markets in Sydney. Nicky Zimmermann, then studying fashion design at East Sydney Technical College, made clothes in her parents' garage and sold them from a weekend stall; her sister Simone joined to run the business side. The partnership has held ever since, with Nicky as creative director and Simone looking after the business, and the label remains a family company in spirit even as its ownership has changed.
The sisters' early success came from swimwear, cut and printed with a fashion sensibility unusual in Australian beachwear of the time, and from feminine, printed ready-to-wear. They opened their first boutique in Sydney's Paddington and spread through Australia's major cities. The house signatures settled early: broderie anglaise, ruffles, scalloped edges, corseted waists, ditsy and painterly florals, and floaty dresses designed for long summers.
International expansion began in the 2000s. Zimmermann showed swimwear and then ready-to-wear at New York Fashion Week, opened boutiques in the United States, and built a following among celebrities whose holiday photographs made its dresses a fixture of summer wardrobes. Boutiques followed in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and London.
Investment followed growth. In 2016 the American firm General Atlantic took a minority stake. In December 2020 the Italian investment firm Style Capital acquired a 70 per cent stake, including General Atlantic's holding, and under its ownership Zimmermann moved its runway shows to Paris Fashion Week in 2022, a decisive step towards being judged among the great houses. In August 2023 the US private equity group Advent International acquired a majority stake in a deal reported to value the business at about A$1.5 billion, a record for an Australian fashion company, with Style Capital and the founders retaining minority stakes.
The label has continued to expand its store network across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, alongside resort, kidswear, bridal and accessories lines, and the Australian Financial Review reported strong sales growth in late 2025. The house now presents its ready-to-wear on the Paris schedule each season. For all its scale, Zimmermann's design language has stayed remarkably constant: romantic, sun-washed and unmistakably Australian, the look of a Sydney summer reworked for the world.
